Cheryl Tobler currently lives in Silver Spring, Maryland and is a Ph.D. candidate in ethnomusicology at the University of Maryland. She completed bachelor degrees in music education and English and a masters degree in technical communication from James Madison University in Virginia. She has taught in Maryland, Virginia and Seoul, Korea, and has performed either solo or in an ensemble in the U.S., Korea, England, Ireland and other numerous venues in Europe. She has also worked at the National Council for the Traditional Arts, where she was able, with project leader Joe Wilson and Josh Kohn, to research and write a book on The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.
Trained as a classical flutist, Cheryl joined "the dark side' and now performs traditional music. Her main teachers include Aran Olwell (Irish flute and fiddle), Brendan Mulvihill (Irish fiddle) and Scott Prouty (old-time fiddle). When not living in the university library or jamming around D.C., she likes to travel and compare veggie burgers around the world.
